Founded by Craftsmen

Jerry Sutherland and Barry Kelso founded K-LAND over twelve years ago. The partnership began as a small local business, concentrating on residential conversions and extensions. On a small island news travels fast, and K-LAND quickly gained a loyal customer base, known for trustworthy, reliable construction and building works.

As the company grew, so did its local reputation. The first ‘on-site office’ was a compact, white site container on a farm. Surrounded by inquisitive cows (and a handy farm shop), K-LAND was able to take on larger and more complex building works. Like each of its construction projects, K-LAND is built on solid foundations; high standards of quality craftsmanship and customer care.

We now have a Senior Leadership team with an equally experienced on-site team of tradesmen and labourers, plus some of the island’s most experienced subcontractors who all share our commitment to quality and service.

We're not family, but we feel like one

We’re an experienced and dedicated team with eight directly employed on-site and an administrative team of four based in the office, including a full time in-house quantity surveyor. We treat every customer, and one another, with consideration and respect.

Jerry Sutherland

Managing Director

Jerry Sutherland / Managing Director

Trained as a stonemason in 1995.
Specialised in blockwork, bricklaying, groundwork, and superstructure works.
Set up K-LAND in 2011; concentrating on small extensions, refurbishments, and loft conversions.
Grew to larger projects with bigger values up to £1.5 million.
K-LAND became a Limited Company in 2018, with Jerry as Director.
Moved off-site and into the office in 2021 to work in the role of Director and Project Manager, a role which continues today.
Bought out his partner later in 2021 and has a vision to grow the Company even further.
Jerry enjoys the gym, swimming, playing the piano, and spending time with his family.

Karen Depledge

Finance Director

Karen Depledge / Finance Director

Qualified as a solicitor in 1999.
Worked for 10 years in the profession in Probate and Conveyancing departments before taking time out to have a family.
Joined K-LAND in 2016 as an Administration Assistant to help structure the administrative side of the business.
Introduced HR, payroll, administrative and legal systems and managed them for 4 years.
Helped to grow the Company and became the Finance Director in 2022.
Karen enjoys running, walking, yoga, socialising, and spending time with her family.

Adrian Carr

Quantity Surveyor

Adrian Carr / Quantity Surveyor

Has been working in the construction industry for the last 12 years, starting out with Dandara as a trainee quantity surveyor.
During this time, he also completed a course in Construction Management through Highlands College and London Southbank on a day release basis.
Adrian then spent two years in London working with Berkeley Homes as a Quantity Surveyor where he gained valuable experience working with the biggest house builder in London.
Since moving back to the island Adrian has worked with various main contractors and other contractors on a freelance basis and delved into his passion for starting businesses.
Co-founded Hotpod Yoga Jersey in September 2019 and Downdog Coffee Shop in November 2020.
Has just started a family with his partner and is currently renovating their family home.
Adrian loves holidays, socialising with friends and football.

Gayle Blood

Administration Assistant

Gayle Blood / Administration Assistant

First class graduate with a BA (Hons.) Sociology. Has also completed a degree in Law and an MA Investigative Psychology.
Previously had a 10-year career in the Trust industry before going to university. She then did 5 years in Marketing and PR and was Marketing and Media Officer for the Charity Liberate for three years.
Joined K-LAND in 2021 as an Administrative Assistant doing ad hoc duties involving everything from bookkeeping and payroll to drafting company policies.
She takes pride in her role in the Company, helping Karen and Jerry to grow the business and keep it running smoothly.
Gayle enjoys reading and watching crime dramas, Muay Thai kickboxing, and socialising with friends.

Sean O’Neill

Site Foreman

Sean O’Neill / Site Foreman

He has a career spanning 30-years in the building trade.
Started in a joiner’s workshop making doors and windows.
Moved onto site qualifying as a carpenter aged 21, gaining experience in all aspects of carpentry, build and running sites.
Sean enjoys fishing on his boat and visiting the small islands around Jersey, cooking and spending time with his girlfriend.
He is also a big football lover and supports Stockport County and Man City.

What makes him tick?

Using modern materials and trying new building methods.

Kenny Mayo

Trainee Site Foreman

Kenny Mayo / Trainee Site Foreman

Originally from Stockport, moved to Jersey in 2011.
Spent a 30-year career in the building industry starting off as an ad hoc carrier for a bricklayer before working his way up to trainee site foreman.
Experienced all-rounder, having gained experience in all aspects of the building trade.
Kenny enjoys cooking (he once aspired to be a chef) and DIY.

Our Approach

K-LAND was founded by two craftsmen, and we still set ourselves high standards of quality craftsmanship and excellence. If there’s a job to do, it will be done to the highest quality, and be fully compliant with all building regulations.

For all of us, craftsmanship is a matter of personal pride as well as professional reputation.

The construction industry would not exist without raw materials – timber, stone, and concrete. And, as Islanders who live on a beautiful but densely populated island, we recycle as much as we possibly can.

So, when we’re demolishing a building, almost everything – from the concrete blocks right down to the copper wire – is sorted and sent to the reclamation site for recycling. It’s a circular economy. Nothing is wasted.

Sometimes people wish to recycle or re-use existing elements of their property such as window frames, rather than replace them. So, if you want to retain your current windows and frames rather than buy new ones, we can carefully remove, clean and re-fit them.

Before we begin construction, we always conduct an asbestos survey. If we discover that there is asbestos, we will remove it safely, package it securely and dispose of it properly.

There’s no two ways about it – having building work done is stressful, especially if you’re living in the house at the same time. We try to minimize the disruption as much as possible – it’s part of our commitment to customer care.

When we leave for the day, we tidy away tools, clear up and hoover. We understand that it’s bad enough having builders in for weeks without having to clear up after them. A building project can take six months, and in that time, we want you to feel that we’re almost part of your family.

It’s simple. We respect our team and give them the flexibility to balance their work and family life. In return, everyone goes the extra mile – both for each other, and for you.
